Ecolucerna Lodge is located 23km down river from the Peruvian town of Puerto Maldonado. Access is via wooden long boat and the journey from town takes around 1.5 hours. Ecolucerna lodge sits riverside on the Madre de Dios river within the Madre de Dios jungle. The vegetation is so lush and thick that the lodge is barely visible as you approach by boat. However once you step ashore you are welcomed by neat paths and gardens that house seven rustic wooden bungalows with thatched roofs.
The bungalows are eco friendly and blend with the Amazon, spread amongst the jungle for privacy. They are spacious and fully screened to help with ventilation and cooling breezes. Built off the ground to keep the bugs and rain out (after all you are in the jungle). They are lightly furnished with beds, table and mosquito nets. Each bungalow offers a bathroom area with toilet, hand basin, mirror, toiletries, towels and a cold water shower (no hot water is available but hey its the Amazon, its hot enough outside) There is just one central light in each bungalow. There are no power outlets, but all devices can be powered in the main communal bungalow. At the time of our stay electricity was available for a few hours in the mornings and evenings when they power up the generator.
Ecolucerna Lodge is a family run business that opened its doors to guests in 2016. There is one central bungalow that is the Isula Restaurant. This doubles as the reception, guest lounge, bar and relaxation area, a place to meet and eat with your fellow guests. The staff are local, they understand the jungle and will brief you on arrival and answer any questions you may have about staying and exploring within the Amazon.
As with most lodges within the Amazon Jungle you will be in a remote location, no other lodges, resorts or towns are accessible. We recommend that you take an all inclusive package which includes your boat transfers, accommodation, meals, guided tours and activities. Ecolucerna Lodge offers packages starting from 2 day / 1 night through to 4 or 5 day packages.
The food served was traditional Peruvian food, super healthy and very tasty. The dishes were local to the region and they grow may of the ingredients or source them from local farmers. The fish from the river out front was super delicious.
We choose to stay on a 4 day, 3 night package, our guide Roberto was very knowledgable and super friendly. You can read more about the itinerary and our stay on our blog post here..
