Day 1-2 San Jose
Travel to Costa Rica’s vivacious capital, San Jose. Situated in the heart of the Central Valley, this region boasts an impressive bevy of amusements and attractions for the inquiring traveller. Join a guided tour and take in the city sights, before heading out to visit a local coffee plantation, sugar cane mill and butterfly farm.
Day 3-4 Tortuguero National Park
Navigate the fertile waterways of Tortuguero National Park and soak up Mother Nature's most flamboyant floral displays. Keep an eye open for the park’s fauna too, particularly the many turtle species - green, hawksbill and giant leatherback - that call this region home. Back at the lodge, delight in some home comforts and rest and relax poolside.
Day 5-6 Sarapiqui
Travel onwards to Sarapiqui, a region rich in biodiversity and beloved by birdwatchers. How you explore the lush, tropical surrounds of this idyllic location is up to you and your family - saddle up on horseback, make for the forest trails by foot or hit the gushing rapids of Pacuare River for some whitewater rafting.
Day 7-8 Arenal
A quaint town surrounded by verdant plains and set against one of the most incredible backdrops imaginable, Arenal never fails to beguile. Head out on a wildlife walk through the National Park's cloud forest and then observe some geothermal splutterings - courtesy of Arenal Volcano - from one of the many local thermal pools.
Day 9-10 Monteverde
Take in the cooler climate and changing vegetation on the climb into coffee country. Try to spot the Resplendent Quetzal - a bird well deserving of the adjective in its name - amid the lush terrain of Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve. For the ultimate bird's-eye view, head out on a canopy walk or zip-lining excursion through the forest roof.
Day 11-13 Manuel Antonio National Park
Follow the Pan-American Highway southward, passing mangroves and palm plantations, to the Costa Rican coast. Soak up some rays and relish the spoils of this unique beach setting, where lush rainforests sprawl gently towards the sand and white-faced capuchin monkeys peer cheekily from the treetops.
Day 14-15 San Jose
Set out on a jungle trek through the Carara Biological Reserve, keeping eyes peeled for the rare scarlet macaw. Pass through the agricultural townships of Orotina and Atenas on the final leg of the journey back to San Jose. Before departure, be sure to indulge in a final Costa Rican meal and hit the city's colourful markets for some last-minute souvenir shopping.
